Although Willie Burns is New Orleans born and bred, this debut single evokes the power of some of New York’s greatest labels, namely Strictly Rhythm and Nu Groove. The key track here is Fantasy MD, which shimmers and shines with a brilliance that heralds back to classic tracks like “Waterfall”. The rich, analogue rhythm is complemented to stunning effect by sinewy synths that mutate in unexpected ways. There’s other material to admire as well; “Key Horizon” pusles like Larry Heard and Danny Wolfers on a collision course, whilst “Rewind” has a nagging drum-machine fuelled energy about it that made me return to it regularly. This is an impressive start for Mr Burns. Excellent.
