Microthol - Supergravity
Whilst I have in the past derided electro for its almost stoic devotion to formula, on the flipside it is a genre that seems wonderfully resistant to fashion. Impervious to trends, it’s refreshing to hear a genre that isn’t trying to synthesize crushing industrial noises or trying to bring back a Balearic heyday. The futurism of electro is a much-travelled path, but the strict adherence to certain technical requirements such as an 808 can often make for compelling listening.
Both Trust and Microthol have been putting out quality electro with the minimum of fuss for sometime, although this is the Viennese duo’s first release for two years. This EP is nicely textured, with the warm, melancholy vibe of the title track being offset by the menacing tones of “Atlas Detection”, which goes down a dark path. “Andolit Swaras” however is the highlight, an almost arabic swirl of noise and tense beats. It’s not designed for the dancefloor at all, but contrasts well with the others. To complete the eclecticism is “The Bliss”, a crunchy hiphop track featuring ex-Jungle brother rapper Sensational. The odd acid twinge however doesn’t really rescue it from being a little formulaic.
