Alex Israel - Walking to Guntersville

I don’t know a great deal about Chicago resident Alex Israel, other than this is his first physical release, the others being digital. He’s chosen a corking label to start on, as William Burnett (aka Speculator) has built up a steady discography of quality techno and house over 5 previous outings with releases from other Bleep43 faves $tinkworx and DJ Overdose and my favourite techno record of last year, Entro Senestre’s “La Caccia”.
There’s no let up in the output control with this EP, which is four tracks of varying texture and emotion, from the reflective house of the title song to the sinewy 4am sparkle of “GAZ-13”, which veers more towards the intricacy of Cobblestone Jazz than anything else. “Bindlestiff” has an excellent momentum to it akin to Thomas Brinkmann at his best and whilst “Nkisi” doesn’t reach the same levels as the others, it rounds off another great release for a label that everyone should take notice of.
