Jichael Mackson - Bob's Your Uncle

Stock

Boris Steffen is one of a handful of artists within the dub techno realm who manages to keep things interesting in the genre. Although a cursory skip through this three track EP might not reveal anything particularly worthwhile, these compositions mutate and shift effortlessly. Despite a rather perfunctory start, “Gedons” is a 14 minute journey through all manner of landscapes with only disembodied voices as a constant companion. It never peaks, yet there’s enough sonic embroidery here to satisfy.

The other tracks on the flip, “GTI” and “Venga” aren’t so prone to turning off unexpectedly, but are still well-executed atmospheric tracks that contrast strongly to the main piece.  The latter in particular is how dub techno should be made - less reliance on drenching everything in reverb, a frission of melody and some funk.
